China Agriculture Bid Farewell To Traditional Flood Irrigation

Aug 18, 2022

The reporter learned from the Ministry of Water Resources: The latest data shows that China's agricultural water use has bid farewell to traditional flood irrigation, and has shifted from "watering the land" to "watering crops". The effective utilization coefficient of irrigation water has reached 0.542. While ensuring national food security, protect agricultural irrigation water. The total amount achieved zero growth. In the past five years, 100 million mu of new high-efficiency water-saving irrigation area has been added nationwide, and the high-efficiency water-saving irrigation area has exceeded 300 million mu.

According to estimates, in the high-efficiency water-saving irrigation project area, the effective utilization coefficient of farmland irrigation water can reach more than 0.8, which can save 20% to 50% of water compared with traditional ground irrigation. After the implementation of the project in 2017, the annual water saving capacity can be increased by 1.7 billion cubic meters, which is equivalent to saving the water storage capacity of 121 West Lakes. According to the 2016 Water Resources Bulletin, the national domestic water consumption increased by 2.81 billion cubic meters year-on-year, and the artificial ecological environment water supply increased by 1.99 billion cubic meters year-on-year. Agricultural water saving has made a positive contribution to the sustainable use of water resources.

Through the development of high-efficiency water-saving irrigation, the average grain output per mu in the project area has been increased by 10% to 40%, and the grain production capacity has been greatly improved. Compared with traditional irrigation, high-efficiency water-saving irrigation can reduce labor by 3 to 5 working days, and improve the utilization rate of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by 5% to 20%.

According to reports, by 2020, the water-saving renovation of 434 large-scale irrigation areas and 2,157 key medium-sized irrigation areas will be basically completed. By then, the national high-efficiency water-saving irrigation area will account for more than 30% of the effective irrigation area, and the effective utilization coefficient of farmland irrigation water will reach more than 0.55.
